Data centre demand is the grid's next big challenge. Is now the right time?

I'm currently researching the impact and scale of planned data centres in the UK, and pairing them against renewable curtailment, to see if there's a positive narrative being avoided in most discussions and if further progressive conversation can happen. This is taking longer to research than anticipated, so enjoy this placeholder instead for now.

Scotland holds 9,994 MW of operational onshore wind against 2,862 MW for all of England, and the load wants to be in the Thames Valley. That gap is why we pay to switch turbines off. Cambois and Ravenscraig are the two that interest me most: the first big loads proposed on the right side of the constraint.

  1. Northumberland County Council consented the first phase of the QTS/Blackstone Cambois campus on 2 December 2025, a scheme that could scale to 720 MW across up to ten buildings. Culham is the UK's first designated AI Growth Zone, with roughly 100 MW of initial dual-resilient power and stated plans to scale beyond. North Lanarkshire was designated in January 2026, reported as unlocking around 500 MW at Ravenscraig. Sites are plotted at town level, and dot size follows those published megawatts.
